Ceylon True Cinnamon For Diabetes

It’s time to look at the potential health promoting-effects of Ceylon cinnamon, particularly for the diabetic patients. It has been long considered as a medicine in various parts of the world, however, the spice is a good way to add flavors in the meals.

A growing number of studies recommends that accurate and regular supplementation of cinnamon could help to control blood sugar levels and Type 2 diabetes. It is further suggested that the strong properties in Ceylon cinnamon can help those with insulin resistance.

Diabetes is among one of those frustration diseases that can lead toward several other disorders. Self-management is an encouraging effort, under the consequences of diabetes.

With an estimated 80% of the world population with diabetes are those who live in developing countries. Thus, modern studies have maintained focus on finding the dietary components that are beneficial in the treatment of diabetes. Studies have concluded that ceylon cinnamon is one magical dietary component that has substances with insulin-mimetic properties.

A famous research nutritionist, Paul Davis with the University of California, Davis said that ceylon cinnamon in the diet can help control blood sugar. However, a meta-analysis is published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, in which he concluded that cinnamon lowers fasting blood glucose.

Paul further said,"According to our results, it's a modest effect of about 3 to 5 percent," Davis says. This is about the level of reduction found in the older generation of diabetes drugs”

It should also kept in mind that those who already have diabetes cannot take cinnamon as an alternative to medication. A diabetes educator, Emmy Suhl of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston said that Ceylon cinnamon is one of strategies that can be used in diets to control blood sugar levels by those people with pre-diabetes.

The spice is however, inexpensive to be used as a medication and even the warm flavor is always delightful to be added in a meal.

Does cinnamon really work and if it does, then what should be the accurate dosage?

Most of the people get awareness about the health benefits but the regular dosage is still an important consideration. Make sure that one starts with the smallest dose of 1g to observe if cinnamon is helpful to improve blood sugar levels.

Ikhlas Khan, a researcher at the University of Mississippi’s School of Pharmacy observed the amounts of coumarin in cinnamon foods in the US told The Salt that all those people who want to use cinnamon for medication purposes should first consult with the concerned doctors before they intake large amounts.

A clinical study published in the Diabetes Care Journal in 2003 concluded that a daily intake of 1,3 or 6 grams was successful to reduce glucose levels, triglyceride and bad cholesterol after an experiment of 40 days among 60 aged men and women.

After the conduct of 2003 studies, the effectiveness of cinnamon supplementation in form of capsules in patients having type-2 diabetes received lot of media attraction.

Another study published in 2000 edition of Agriculture Research Magazine resulted that consumption of 1g of cinnamon per day may increase insulin sensitivity and can manage type 2 diabetes.
